# SMS pricing

Every paid plan includes texts each month. After those, each message has one price, shown in dollars. You pay for texts that arrive, and nothing for the ones that do not.

## What a message is

A message is up to 160 characters (70 if it has an emoji or another special character). A longer text is sent and billed as several messages.

A picture message counts as 3 messages. Texts people send you are free.

On Free you get 50 test texts a month, to your own verified phones only. Paid plans include 10 messages for every dollar of the plan.

## Questions

### When am I charged?

When a text is delivered, or 72 hours after it was sent if no delivery report ever comes. A failed, skipped or canceled text is never charged, even when it cost us something.

### What happens when the included texts run out?

With pay as you go on, which is the default on paid plans, texts carry on at your plan's price per message, billed at the end of the month. With it off, sending stops at the allowance until the month turns.

### Can I cap what I spend?

Yes. Texts have their own spend cap, counted in messages, beside the one for email. Reaching it stops texts with `429 sms_quota_exceeded` and sends you an alert; email is not affected.

### Do texts use my email allowance?

No. Texts have their own monthly allowance and their own line on the invoice.

### Where can I text?

- The United States, including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
- Canada. Picture messages reach US numbers only for now.
